The falling home values may chill consumer spending enough to make a recession more likely than a soft landing, according to Dan Meckstroth, chief economist at the Manufacturers Alliance. The housing market drives demand for a wide variety of chemicals and chemicals-based products such as polyvinyl chloride pipe, insulation, paints and coatings, adhesives and synthetic fibres.
