ABSTRACT
This article warns that the sharp and continuing decline in the U.S. home segment could push the nation into recession. The falling home values may chill consumer spending enough to make a recession more likely than a soft landing, according to Dan Meckstroth, chief economist at the Manufacturers Alliance. The housing market drives demand for a wide variety of chemicals and chemicals-based products such as polyvinyl chloride pipe, insulation, paints and coatings, adhesives and synthetic fibres.
