This article reports on Advanced Micro Devices' (AMD) multimedia campaign to be launched in Fall 1999, positioning its new Athlon chip as the world's fastest computer processor. The effort will begin with print advertisements in November 1999 magazines and newspapers. The creative from Hill, Holiday, Connors, Cosmopulos, Boston, will target sophisticated consumers, small- and medium-sized businesses and corporate buyers, delivering messages of how various software program perform better on the AMD Athlon processor than the fastest Pentium III processor from archrival Intel Corp. The print advertisements will run through 2000 to seed the Athlon name and positioning. The advertisements will also direct readers to the AMD Web site. Outdoor advertisements will run in eight major markets. AMD is eager to shift away from its status in the low-end chip market and break into the corporate market.
