The article narrates the author's experience on his homecoming to Tientsin in North China. When he arrived, he was shocked that the city he had known seemed to be wearing a hideous mask. This was the consequence of a very bad earthquake that occurred in the city. The center of the town became horribly disfigured by the little brick hovels. It took him several days to begin to see the face of the city beneath the mask.
