ABSTRACT
The article reports on the state of newspaper publishing in developed countries. One of the biggest chains in the U.S. is Knight Ridder was dismantled and sold off, the Tribune Co. is imploding and profits are off at the New York Times Co., Gannett, Dow Jones and the Washington Post Co. The Internet is siphoning away readers and advertising. Independent News & Media sells a majority of its 175 newspaper and magazine titles in cities where the Internet is weak.
