Trees -- A different shade of green

The article shares the author's insights on the massive tree-planting campaign in several cities in the U.S. Mass-tree planting in the cities has become a principal component of the effort to fight global warming by sucking up carbon dioxide from the air. A tree in the urban setting helps save energy since it decreases air temperature thereby reducing the air conditioning needed. However, trees provide full benefits after 25 to 30 years and it takes capital which many cities lack. Los Angeles plans to spend $70 million for the project and it has partnered with five nonprofit organizations. Meanwhile, the Forest Service's Urban and Community Forestry Program shoulders some the expenses through grants to the cities.
