Demand boosts Japanese profits

Asahi Kasei posted a 12.4% increase in operating profit to Yen15.3 billion (€103.5 million/$132.9 million) in the three months ended June 2006, led by its key chemical and electronic materials and devices businesses. Mitsui Chemicals' operating income in the first quarter rose 4.3% from the same time last year to Yen16.7 billion, while sales expanded 15.7% to Yen401.9 billion.
