ABSTRACT
This article reports that a non-genetically modified yeast strain has been developed by Poland's Wroclaw Agricultural University and the Wroclaw University of Economics to convert crude glycerine derived from biodiesel production to citric acid on an industrial scale. An exclusive licence was signed by Biotechconsult with the universities covering the technology, which it claims significantly reduces the cost of producing citric acid. Trials to produce itaconic acid have proved successful at pilot plant level.
