The article discusses the implications of ergot on active management of the third stage of childbirth. The first documentation of ergot, which was used to stimulate uterine contractions, was in 1582. However, due to its side effects, the administration before delivery was abandoned in the 19th century. Its application for the treatment of miscarriage and postpartum hemorrhage was emphasized.
