ABSTRACT
The article describes controlled trials, studies and reports that support the effectiveness of carotid endarterectomy as a vascular surgical procedure. The aim of the procedure is to reduce the risk of stroke and death in patients with carotid artery disease. Results of trials on symptomatic carotid stenosis and asymptomatic stenosis are described. The potential of carotid angioplasty as a better alternative to carotid endarterectomy is also discussed.
