ABSTRACT
The article discusses the need for organizations to plan ahead and be prepared for major natural disasters. Pellerin Milnor Corp., located in Louisiana during Hurricane Katrina, is used as an example of how unexpectedly things can go wrong. The author argues that it is important to base the disaster recovery plan on a solid business continuity plan. Instructions for developing the latter are given. The need to have a communication plan is one of the most important. It is recommended to have a redundancy in everything, especially in relation to back-up power and data systems, and to have a diversity of back up operation plans. Additional advice is presented.
