ABSTRACT
This article reports on the efforts that large sporting good retailers are taking to develop ties in local communities. Small stores have a slightly easier time, because they can function as a local hang-out or as a meeting place for groups, but bigger retailers that have stores in multiple cities and states need to work harder to foster relationships. Retailers find that by donating products to needy teams or celebrating local student athletes allows a positive connotation with their name and a related increase in sales.
