The article examines the perceptions and status of indexing in Germany by examining the literature on typography and book design, which, according to the author, only marginally address indexing. German publishers and typesetters, the author notes, do not place enough emphasis on the importance of quality indexes to researchers and consistently ignore internationally accepted standards of practice. Several sample indexes are presented and discussed in order to illustrate the typical quality of German indexing.
