ABSTRACT
This article discusses the importance of effective management especially for those managers responsible for information technology (IT). Investor confidence relies on the accuracy and timeliness of financial reporting and, since most businesses are automated, this function relies on IT. If those who are in charge of IT matters fail to address the need for basic IT controls, then they may go from respected upper echelon managers to scapegoats. Many IT managers believe that they are never in danger of failure and neglect to take the necessary steps to insure their IT system. IT managers should keep privileged user passwords in a secure place and such passwords should be changed regularly. The privileged user password should only be released under strict controls.
