The article reports on the preliminary results from a university study on activist hedge funds in the U.S. Evidence shows that cantankerous leanings give some hedge funds a distinct advantage over the activist investors in acquiring better performance out of a target's stock. According to the study, passive forms of activism, which focus on such areas ad a company's capital structure or governance generally lead to a market response described by the researchers as insignificant.
