ABSTRACT
This article deals with the battle faced by Register.com against Network Solutions as of September 1999. Register.com, New York, an independent Internet domain name registrar, launches its first advertisement with radio in Chicago, New York, San Francisco and Washington. Print starts on October 1, 1999. The company will spend roughly $2 million on the initial campaign, which runs through November 15, 1999. Starting in January 2000, Register.com will expand the campaign nationally. On the other hand, Network Solutions has been licensed by the government since 1992 as the official registrar of Internet domain names. The company, which in 1998 made $11.2 million on revenues of $93.7 million, built up a list of more than 5 million existing domains. The U.S. Department of Commerce has been testing five accredited registrars, one of which is Register.com, to access Network Solutions' database of registered domain names, to register .com .net and .org domain names.
