ABSTRACT
The article discusses the impact of financial market's emphasis on short-term returns on emerging sustainability economy. According to Fred Buenrostro Jr.,CEO of California Public Employees' Retirement System, pensions and super funds in the U.S. are the biggest controller of short-term goals in businesses and originator of short-termism, which is considered to be one of the central challenges to sustainable development. Several studies have argued that the short-term pressures that investment funds have produced hinder the commitment of businesses to corporate social responsibility and wider sustainability imperatives. The Business Council of Australia has published a report arguing that market driven short-termism was threatening the long-term competitiveness of Australian companies.
