ABSTRACT
The author comments on several music performances in New York City. Rudolf Serkin's performance of Beethoven's Fourth Piano Concerto with the Philadelphia Orchestra used a virtuoso approach with Serkin playing without the scholarly meticulousness that has marked some of his performances. Thomas Schippers, who conducted the Philharmonic Orchestra, showed a mastery of the score throughout the performance. Soprano Jane Rhodes performed well in the opera "Salome."
