Using a low-power microcontroller as a system supervisor

The article discusses the importance of using a low-power microcontroller as a system supervisor. Adding a small and inexpensive microcontroller to a complex system can reduce current consumption by offloading supervisor tasks from a main processor. Semiconductor vendors have developed the system-on-chip integration. Supervisory functions include power supply monitoring and reset, real-time clock keeping, keypad or human interface management and power supply sequencing. Modern microcontrollers include integrated brownout protection which guarantee a reliable start-up during power-up. Furthermore, this enables the microcontroller to be used for the power sequencing and reset-supervision of the main processor.
