ABSTRACT
The article relates the author's memories of St. Petersburg, Russia. He led a particularly confined indoor life during his childhood in which any sound of the outside world was memorable and attractive. He remembers the sound of horse-drawn streetcars, and the rail-scraping noise they made as they turned the corner near their house.
