ABSTRACT
The article presents the author's experience when he was a lunch guest of a young couple who lived in one of the apartment houses on Sutton Place, New York City. The secret garden with the French doors leading to caused the author to feel a sense of loss for the way of life of a great-grandfather who he never knew. However, when the maid used a late-model vacuum to clean the shrubbery, he stopped feeling a sense of loss.
