ABSTRACT
The article describes the destruction of the Grand Opera House at Eighth Avenue in New York to give way for the Penn Station South housing development. The original building was designed by architect Griffith Thomas. Its builder was German-Jewish immigrant named Samuel N. Pike. The Opera House failed to make money and was sold to James Fisk Jr. and Jay Gould by Pike.
