March 1960
New Yorker;3/19/1960, Vol. 36 Issue 5, p36
The author discusses the strategy of his friend in getting an off-duty taxi when going uptown. According to the author, he caught sight of his old friend who was holding aloft a white card with 91st and Fifth words written in bold letters. He noticed that the sign he was holding had the dimensions of a legal-size envelope. All taxis that passed were occupied or going to their garages. In three minutes, the driver pulled in front of his friend, opened his door and offered a ride uptown.
