ABSTRACT
The evolution of video tape recording has been typified by new formats being introduced that have either represented performance improvements or an extension of features and facilities. The paper describes a PAL Composite Digital VTR format that attempts to fill one such requirement. That is improved performance whilst maintaining all the features that previous formats have established. The requirements of a successful format are first defined, and then the format derived to fulfil these requirements is examined.
