ABSTRACT
The article presents a segment of twentieth century U.S. history, the settlement of immigrants with jobs and housing in the nineteen twenties. Immigration law restricted the number of newcomers of Southern and Eastern European origin. European Americans enjoyed social mobility but the African Americans did not.
