ABSTRACT
The article discusses the impact of the First Amendment on the freedom of the press in the U.S. in 1991. Information on the changes in political institutions due to cultural upheaval that started in the 1960s is presented. People who were attached to the First Amendment, as well as of its purposes, had a responsibility to take care in picking the places at which to fight back and claim First Amendment protections. The article also advises journalists to distinguish between using the amendment to protect the people's right to know and applying it as a shield for the wrongdoing of news organizations.
