ABSTRACT
This article explains that no sooner do Europe's crackers start to recover from their enforced shutdowns and get close to full operating rates, than the heavy scheduled maintenance period comes knocking at the door. After a stream of unplanned cracker outages during the summer, olefins producers are facing yet another spell of tightness, allowing little chance of rebuilding their dwindling stocks. BP Refining and Petrochemicals recently became the latest in a long line of producers to declare force majeure on ethylene and propylene after a power cut unexpectedly forced the closure of its 440,000 tonnes/year No 3 cracker at Gelsenkirchen, Germany. Meanwhile, Ineos Olefins's 725,000 tonnes/year KG cracker in Grangemouth, U.K., is almost back to full rates -- and its ethylene force majeure soon to be lifted after it went down mid-July.
