The article deals with issues concerning the proposed construction of a gas pipeline in Alaska. A sudden turn in Alaskan politics could further delay the long-sought gas pipeline by a year or more and shift public support from the pipeline to exporting liquefied natural gas. Alaska Governor Frank Murkowski was soundly defeated in his bid for a second term as the state's chief executive when his party, the Republicans, voted to have former small town mayor Sarah Palin stand against the Democrat and former two-term governor Tony Knowles in November.
