ABSTRACT
The article discusses the principles in optimizing the use of white light emitting diodes(LEDs) on backlight applications of portable electronic devices. White LEDs in portable devices require boosted battery voltage and an alternative option is the use of a charge pump, also called switched capacitor converter. Switch capacitor converters eliminate inductance and other flaws of magnetic designs which are present when using inductor-based switching techniques. They also produce lower noise and utilize few and small capacitors. The elimination of inductors also results to lower printed circuit board height.
