ABSTRACT
The article discusses the negative effects of incremental cost savings to supermarkets. Incremental cost savings aims to reduce quality levels sufficiently little so that the desired savings come through, but the reduction is undetectable to the end user. However, a deliberate culture of obsessive cost savings may lead to disastrous results for supermarket operators. It discusses the conditions of the coffee industry in the U.S. during the nineteen-eighties.
