The article determines the cytokine-inducing capacity of bacterial vaginosis (BV)-associated bacteria in a human cervix epithelial and a monocytic cell line. Results suggest that BV-associated bacteria are not capable of stimulating the cervical epithelial cells to secrete interleukin-6. It may explain the weak inflammatory symptoms in the lower genital tract of women with BV.
