ABSTRACT
The article focuses on the efforts to reshape the cable franchise landscape in New York City as Verizon Communications gears toward the introduction of its FiOS TV multichannel-television offering. The city's 5 boroughs are covered by 9 cable franchises, with all franchises agreements up for renewal in fall 2008. According to spokeswoman Heather Wilner, Verizon is pursuing local video franchises while supporting statewide and federal reforms to speed market entry and consumer choice.
