The article explores the role of the U.S. Army National Guard in the reconstruction of Afghanistan. Members of the 45th Infantry Brigade Oklahoma Army Guard were among the mentors of the Afghan National Army. The Guard professionalized Afghan troops by putting them through the equivalent of Basic Combat Training and how to lead at the brigade level. Other responsibilities of the National Guard included the provision of high-altitude medical evacuations and combat airdrops.
