ABSTRACT
The author reflects on the phenomenon of "unrealistic optimism" in clinical research compromising informed consent. She argues that its implications for the ethics of clinical research have not been fully appreciated and the phenomenon may be more difficult to address than either the therapeutic misconception or the therapeutic misestimation. She points out the lack of empirical research on the prevalence of unrealistic optimism in human subject clinical trials.
