The article focuses on the increasing role of plastics in microtechnology especially in mass-produced applications in Sarnen, Switzerland. Laser welding of plastics has become a cost-effective technology offering the advantages of non-contact input by laser beam. However, recent progress in semiconductor laser technology have promoted the use of laser welding as an effective and alternative for joining micro-fluidic devices.
