ABSTRACT
The article focuses on the benefits to Internet protocol (IP) over time-division multiplexing in allowing business continuity in times of crises. IP-telophony supports and enhances business continuity, which encompasses varied processes related to preparing for, coping with and recovering from emergencies or disasters. The U.S. Department of Homeland Security stated that a high-availability communications system design is the foundation for disaster prevention recovery and must be able to handle major incidents. Based on the logical connectivity of packet switching, IP-telephony allows for fully distributed call processing control and survivable remote media gateways. It has not been proven to save costs, but it prevents potential losses with uninterruptible communications services.
