ABSTRACT
The article focuses on the 1980s campaign to save Ravenscraig steelworks in Lanarkshire, Scotland. The campaign to save Ravenscraig is placed within the context of steel nationalisation, the post-war consensus in British politics and the privatisation programme. The changing nature of Conservatism between the 1950s and 1980s, and its impact on attitudes to regional development, is outlined. Consideration is given to the role played by the European Economic Community in the rundown of the Scottish steel industry.
