This article presents news briefs related to the chemical industry. Akzo Nobel has warned of further restructuring in its European coatings business. Chief financial officer Rob Frohn said that higher raw material costs had made the decorative business tough in the more mature markets, especially in Europe. Meanwhile, the port of Haifa in Israel has been closed and some chemicals production in the area has been reduced, following missile attacks on the city by Hezbollah guerrillas. In another news, BASF, Roche and Aventis will make a Aus$30.5 million payment to settle an Australian class action alleging that the three companies took part in a vitamins price-fixing cartel in the 1990s.
