The article provides some insights into the emergence and development of combination fire departments in the United States. These departments are formed by hiring daytime drivers of skeleton fire crews and nighttime operations which rely entirely on volunteers. Many fire departments also began to provide some level of first aid or medical response. The fire service also expanded its roles into technical, farm rescue and the like.
