ABSTRACT
The article presents news briefs in the chemical industry. Scientists at the John Innes Centre in Norwich, England and at Washington State University have managed to trigger the growth of root nodules, the site of nitrogen fixation by plants, in legumes such as peas, in the absence of bacteria that are normally involved in this process. U.S. researchers have made a chemical intermediate called hydroxymethylfurfural from fructose rather than petro-chemicals.
