The Myth of Local School Control

The article reports about the educational periodicals of the United States. During the antebellum period, educational periodicals stimulated standardized educational practice. They also promoted educational leadership by supporting the idea of a system of common schools of Ohio. This included similar kinds of programs and procedures for all schools. The educational periodicals acted on the behalf of public relations for the growing educational bureaucracy. Audience was needed for the success of periodicals in their efforts. Therefore, premiums and low subscription rates were offered by the periodicals as new incentives for subscribers. Teachers and educators were stimulated to subscribe to minimum one journal. The journals wanted to develop uniformity among the schools. They aimed at the centralization of control and supervision of the schools.
