The article discusses the economic activity of the automobile industry in Detroit, Michigan. Although the city's share of the automobile market will continue to decline, it will remain a player as long as the market is strong. General Motors made a bit fewer than 24% of the cars sold in the U.S. in 2006, Ford, on the other hand, ran a bit over 17%, excluding its foreign makes. Every point of market share is worth 170,000 sales. Lose a point, shut a plant. Lose two points, shut two more plants.
