The article focuses on the results of comparative tests of high-power fiber lasers, conducted by researchers at Fraunhofer IWS in Dresden, Germany. The special features of the fiber lasers include a very compact system, absence of mechanics between pumping diodes, focusing optic and high wall plug efficiency. Fiber lasers have excellent beam quality and guaranteed high diode lifetime of 50,000 hours. They seems to be an excellent tool for low distortion welds. Other criteria which will play an important role for the decision to purchase fiber lasers include investment costs, running costs and maintenance and service costs.
