The article focuses on the data rate enhancement technology EDGE. EDGE is extending the capabilities of embedded GSM data systems. It builds on existing GSM/ GPRS networks, enabling data rates of 48kbit/s to 69.2kbit/s per timeslot depending on radio condition, without significant investment from the operator. EDGE uses 8-phase shift keying (8PSK). Even though 8PSK provides more efficient transmission under all but the poorest radio conditions, the EDGE coding scheme uses both types of modulation as a fallback against poor reception.
