ABSTRACT
This article reports on the inaugural U.X. Open golf tournament organized by National Media Group at Mountain Creek Resort in Vernon, New Jersey on August 21, 1999. Open to anyone with an under-10 handicap, the competition is being promoted primarily to golfers under age 35 in the New York and New Jersey areas, and is the cornerstone of plans by National Media Group for a tour of 15 such events in 2000, televised on cable television. Several major sponsors intent on reaching the fast-growing audience of extreme sports enthusiasts have come aboard, including Bushnell Sports Optics, Golf Edge energy bars, Junior Golf Magazine, Links Extreme computer game from Microsoft Corp., Pepsi One from Pepsi-Cola Co., Titleist/Pinnacle and Schick from Warner-Lambert Co.
