ABSTRACT
The article reports on why car manufacturers continue to embrace plastics. Long ago, the only car parts made of plastic were the odd radio dial or control knob. Now plastics are found in every part of the car, from the engine compartment to the fuel tank. In a few more years, plastics may be the material of choice for the windscreen, the sunroof and all of the body panels. BASF recently claimed that plastics in cars deliver annual fuel savings of 2.3m tonne in Western Europe. INSET: LIGHTENING THE LOAD.
