ABSTRACT
The development of the gametophyte of Elaphoglossum petiolatum (Sw.) Urban is described in this paper. A comparison is made with other species of Elaphoglossum studied by Stokey and Atkinson (1957). The gametophyte of E. petiolatum varies from ribbon-shaped to cordate, with superficial and marginal unicellular hairs; the prothalli have antheridia or archegonia, or can be protandrous. The main differences between the gametophyte of E. petiolatum and those of the species studied by Stokey and Atkinson lie in time of germination and the shape of the prothallus.
