Finer binning needed to improve white LED tints

The article reports that makers of light emitting diode (LED) need to improve control over tints and color temperature. No power LED maker has yet found a way to make white LEDs to exact brightness and tint specifications. Instead, LEDs are made and then measured to separate them into intensity. Binning problems show up when LEDs from opposite ends of a bin are used in the same or adjacent fixtures. They look unacceptable to consumers. LED makers including Lumileds, Cree and Seoul Semiconductor Co. Ltd. realize the problem.
