The article features painter Walter Lab who left the Los Angeles art scene for Palm Desert, California in 1998. He shares his insights about the creative community in L.A. and Palm Desert. He discusses the impact of the downtown L.A. scene on New York and its failure to change L.A. artists' role as simply the reflection of the New York art community. He cites some of the artists produced by 1980s L.A. who have become major figures in American cultural history.
