The article reports on the efforts of the Indian government to aid global system for mobile communications (GSM)-based operators in acquiring spectrum needed to deploy third-generation (3G) services. The Department of Telecommunications ordered Tata Teleservices Ltd. to postpone the launch of the code division multiple access (CDMA) Evolution-Data Only technology. There is a possibility that CDMA carriers will increase their market share by launching 3G services before GSM-based carriers.
