The article reports on the increase in European and Asian toluene spot prices in June 2006. Although buying activity has been typically muted, the past few weeks have seen prices in both regions soar to all-time highs. Observers say that the crux of the problem is the decision of the U.S. to withdraw indemnity for the use of methyl tertiary butyl ether as a gasoline additive. The much-publicised move follows fears over groundwater pollution, which has already led to it being banned by a number of states.
